5 out of 5 Ohta's FK7 friction folder

Sometime ago on a lark I decided to purchase one of the little friction folders by Ohta that Mike was offering and found it to be of high quality and very well made. That was the FK5 and I have carried it nearly exclusively since it arrived. Recently I thought I might like to have that same knife in a little larger size so I ordered the FK7. I now prefer the larger one and carry it daily. I am in no way expert in knife making and heat treating but it is obvious that Hiroaki Ohta is. The D2 blade takes as keen an edge as I am able to give it and holds that edge for a good long time. The handles are made of various hardwoods and are finished to perfection. If you want a custom made example of Japanese tradition made from beginning to end by one craftsman then go no further than one of these fine knives. They are supplied with a pocket slip by the maker but if you want to upgrade to one a bit nicer the large Tuscany traditional pocket knife slip fits the FK7 like a glove.

5 out of 5 Beautiful and Simple Old Style Pocket Knife

I purchased both the Ohta FK5 and FK7 in the purple heart wood handles. The FK7 is the larger of the two, being a medium size pocket knife. These pocket knives are simplicity itself: Wood handle, steel blade, and a pin to hold the blade in the handle. There is no steel or brass liner in the handle, just the wood itself, so the knives are very light. There is no spring to hold the blade open, only the friction of the pivot point and the extended tang which extends along the back of the handle and is gripped by the hand as part of the handle. As others have noted, the blades come very sharp. The wood handles are quite attractive. The lack of metal liners in the handle make these somewhat light duty knives, but if you keep that in mind they can still be quite useful cutting tools. Just don’t try to lean on it too hard or use it for heavy tasks. I purchased these knives for the novelty factor and a nod to older, more simple times, not as everyday carry knives. However, if you want to carry one they come with a nice leather pocket slip to protect the wood and keep the knife safe in your pocket. I think every knife buff should have at least one of these.

5 out of 5 Beautiful friction folder!

This is a well made knife at a fair price. Imho it’s perfect for light EDC duties. Comes razor sharp. CK customer service is beyond reproach! I ordered one at the beginning of June and when it failed to show up Mike contacted USPS and initiated a lost mail search. In the meantime he sent me another at no cost. Mike, if the first one ever comes I promise to send it back to you! Thanks!

I bought 2 sizes and I am happy with both. I will be ordering a couple more for gift giving. Perfect urban, minimalist, west coast feel.
