5 out of 5 First friction folder
biomed (verified owner) –
I bought this knife as a gift. Never having owned a friction folder before I was quite intrigued with the Ohta knives. So much so that I also bought one with the birch handle. These knives have a high quality yet retain a handmade feeling. The D2 blade came with an edge capable of cleanly slicing thin shavings from a sheet of paper. The purple heart wood color and finish is superb (the birch is also beautiful). If you want to try a friction folder the Otah is the way to go. As usual the service from Mike is top notch.

5 out of 5 Beautiful and Simple Old Style Pocket Knife
Richard (verified owner) –
I purchased both the Ohta FK5 and FK7 in the purple heart wood handles. The FK5 is the smaller of the two. These pocket knives are simplicity itself: Wood handle, steel blade, and a pin to hold the blade in the handle. There is no steel or brass liner in the handle, just the wood itself, so the knives are very light. There is no spring to hold the blade open, only the friction of the pivot point and the extended tang which extends along the back of the handle and is gripped by the hand as part of the handle. As others have noted, the blades come very sharp. The wood handles are quite attractive. The lack of metal liners in the handle make these somewhat light duty knives, but if you keep that in mind they can still be quite useful cutting tools. Just don’t try to lean on it too hard or use it for heavy tasks. I purchased these knives for the novelty factor and a nod to older, more simple times, not as everyday carry knives. However, if you want to carry one they come with a nice leather pocket slip to protect the wood and keep the knife safe in your pocket. I think every knife buff should have at least one of these.
