5 out of 5 Constant Pocket Companion

I got one of these Ohta folders after seeing them for years on various sites, never expecting more than just something unusual to keep on my desk for letter opening and small tasks. That first one has been my EDC since the day it arrived, and I’ve started collecting them in all their many wood choices, plus Micarta and carbon fiber. Such a simple design, of tried and true materials, executed to perfection at a price that nearly any knife enthusiast can afford, this is a perfect little handmade knife. Hiroaki Ohta makes them from D-2 steel in his one-man shop. He even heat treats the blades himself. My one criticism isn’t really even a slight—I found the leather slip cases to be too tight for daily carry (although great for storage), so I don’t use a slip. The FK5 sits upright against the front seam of my jeans pocket (spine forward and tang on top), rarely shifting, never coming open, and always right there to be pulled out for quick one-handed use. At barely over 3/4 ounce, it’s never noticeable until needed, and just what I need for opening mail, packages, slicing apples, tomatoes for sandwiches when away from my own kitchen knives, and snipping fishing mono.

5 out of 5 Handy little cutter!

I finally gave in and tried a friction folder, so glad I did. I bought it more for the novelty but found the utility greater than anticipated. The birch handle was beautifully figured and the blade nicely ground and quite sharp. It was also surprisingly light weight, a mere feather! Makes an ideal knife to throw in a shirt pocket as it just disappears and makes a great letter opener @ work.

5 out of 5 Great little friction folder

Gave the edge a mirror polish and it is the perfect little friction folder. The slip is forgettable so I am having one made that can match the good looks of this little guy.

These knives are beautiful, elegant, lightweight and functional. I’ve given several as gifts and kept this particular variant for myself.

5 out of 5 First friction folder

    (verified owner)

I have been looking at friction folders for a while. I was never convinced to buy until I saw the Ohta knives on CK. The birch handle is beautifully figured. The blade came with an exceptionally sharp edge. The design is very simple and elegantly minimalistic. I am very pleased with my first friction folder! I also purchased one in purple heartwood as a gift.
