I purchased this knife because of the video presentation and the D2 steel blade. The handle of this knife is attractive and robust. This knife is much more substantial than the other sodbusters I have of this size. I will not put this knife in the toolbox as suggested in the video. Too nice of a knife. I will the keep the Rough Riders in the tool box. This is a good buy.

First impression – the Bocote is the prettiest wood I have seen on a knife to date, even better than my GEC bocote handled knives. The D2 blade was very sharp out of the box, sharp enough to shave very thin slices off the edge of a sheet of paper. The pivot is gritty and the brass liners are rough on either side of the back spring near the pivot. A little bit of filing/sanding should take of it. Mike was up front with the description of the fit and finish. The knife is actually better than I thought it would be and with a bit of work it will be an excellent user blade. It did come rough. As in, metal splinters in the pivot and jutting out of the liners rough. The factory edge cut paper readily, amazingly. Just a bit dull at the perfectly shaped tip. Pivot was a touch gritty. But that was before sanding and sharpening.
The result was a very nice knife. Ergonomically, maybe my best folding knife. Even better than my seventies Case sodbuster. The maserin is generous and round and easy to hold. The D2 got nightmare sharp with a touch more effort than I put into carbon. It’s very grippy and sticky even when polished, unlike carbon, with its slippery, silky quality. The blade came from Maserin ground even more thinly than a GEC, so no regrinding or geometry issues. The wood is BEAUTIFUL. It had a hint of sideplay, which I removed with a clamp.
The result is a bananas sharp knife with perfect ergonomics, beautiful wood covers, and great steel,for $30 and 30 minutes work, made in a country that pays its workers.

I’m pleasantly surprised with my Bocote Sodbuster. This is not a “junk” knife! I’m a fan of inexpensive Opinel Knives also. They function very well as does this Sodbuster. Flushed it with WD40 and that improved the opening/closing 75%. Flush it and strop it upon arrival and you have a very fine, Sharp D2 beater knife. I’ll slip it in my pocket when I’m working in the yard. That’s for sure. After all it’s a SODBUSTER !

If you look around, as I did before purchasing, you’ll find that most Sodbusters are made by either Case or Schrade. The remaining models are various Chinese (like Schrade) and a few German brands. Furthermore, most steels in these ‘busters are 420 or 1095, and the choice of handles is pretty slim – i.e. what color of plastic do you want! So, with that said this Maserin offers a better quality handle AND a better quality steel for only a few dollars more than the others. I think it’s a good deal – it would be a great deal if the fit & finish was better, but you can’t have everything at this price.

The knife came as advertised with D2 Steel and a nice Bocote wood handle. Fit & Finish is a bit rough, but it is a 30 $ Dollar Knife after all. I had to clean the blade and apply some nano-oil to improve the opening/closing. The only major criticism I have is that the knife has some blade play, not to the point that I would consider it unsafe or an issue, but enough that it bothers me somewhat. Since the handle is not put together with screws, there is no way for me to adjust this in a easy way, e.g. by adjusting a pivot screw.

As I expected, this little beauty came as a diamond in the rough. After flushing the pivot and stropping the blade, this knife became the best value pocket scalpel I have come across. The size is appealing as it falls almost directly between the Case full sized Sodbuster and the GEC Bull Nose. Great job CK and Maserin!

For 30 bucks this is an extraordinary knife. Great steel that really holds an edge and is ground thin for real slicing ability. Mine was gritty and had some side to side blade play out of the box but a good flush with hot water and mineral oil fixed the grit and a squeeze in a padded vice fixed the blade play.
It’s no bull nose in the fit and finish department but I think the steel is superior and for the money the fit and finish are more than adequate.

This knife came exactly as described, but the blade is phenomenal! My example needed the pivot to be flushed out, so a couple squirts of WD40 and working the pivot cleared out the debris from manufacturing. The action is now a very pleasant and smooth one, with a good snap on opening and closing. The generous handle slabs are nicely finished and rounded, very comfortable and without any hot spots in use.
The blade is nicely ground, and came surprisingly sharp, it cuts post it pad sheets into slivers without grabbing, pretty impressive for an out of the box blade. I bought this because of the description, and it is right on about the blade being the star of the show!
If you don’t mind putting a few minutes into a new knife to clean out the pivot, and de burr the brass liners, this knife will surely please most folks who appreciate a fine tool at a great price!

First and foremost the main reason to buy this knife is the total honesty of the seller. Watch the video a couple of times so you’re sure to know what your getting and you absolutely won’t be disappointed.
To the knife itself. If your looking at this one you are most likely already familiar with the sodbuster style of knives.
Compared to the other junior sized sodbusters there are a couple of really great features here you’ll like. The blade overall length of the Plow is 1/2″ longer than the Case Sod Buster Jr. That extra blade length translates to a 1/2″ mlonger handle than the Case. Why is this a great feature? Because if you’re like me and have big hands the Case Jr although usable is right there on the borderline of being to small and that’s where the Plow’s extra length really shines and gives a more satisfying grip.
The other really great feature is the blade. D2 steel. I personally love D2. I have a small side business sharpening knives and have grown to appreciate the edge holding ability of D2. It is not as difficult to sharpen as you think and with a little stropping you can extend the time between sharpening sessions significantly. Another thing I noticed about the blade is that unlike almost every other mass produced blade it is a true flat grind. What does that mean to you? A true flat grind has more material behind the edge making it stronger. Most blades advertised as ‘flat’ ground are in truth a very shallow grind.
On top of those features it is a beautiful knife. Mine came with a perfectly centered blade. highly polished brass liners and perfectly finished bocote.
What would make this knife better? Honestly not much that wouldn’t raise the price significantly. I would really like to see a full sized model and the addition of a lanyard tube on all the models.

This knife is as described! It is not to the standards of GEC, but it’s attractive, and I have to say, it came sharper than any other knife I have bought! I will be very interested in the performance of the D2 steel. I can certainly see that it will take a very nice edge, as it shaves quite easily. We will see about edge holding after some use.
My only criticism might be that the spring it a bit light. I don’t think that will be a problem though. The handle is beautiful, and very round, giving a very good grip and also easy on the hand if a lot of pressure is needed.
I am somewhat undecided about the 4 star rating, as for the price, this knife delivers great steel and usability, so the value is high.
After playing with it a bit more, I think my comment about the spring is too harsh. The action seems fine to me, and I’m adding another star.
Update:
It’s been a week or two, and I’m still very pleased. The spring and action broke in and I am very happy with that! I have sharpened it (not needed, but I wanted to see what it’s like with my standard edge), and cut up a few cardboard boxes. The steel is holding an edge very well! I’ve ordered a second one in the Santos wood!

I had the same rating issues with another knife when I first rated it. The problem was that I was comparing it to GEC knives that cost 2 to 3 times more. The knife was an excellent buy and the bang for the buck made me rethink the whole thing. I think that the Maserin Sodbuster looks to be an outstanding value and should be given a high rating for a knife in the “economy class”. Otherwise it would be like rating an inexpensive Hyundai using Mercedes standards. I think Mike has done an excellent job in bring this knife to the market!
