Stock Items

We have many knives in inventory due to quantity buying (to keep the prices reasonable for our customers), thus many times the knife shown on the website is not the exact knife you will recieve. If you ever recieve a product that is defective or not the same model / make / age as the one ordered, notify us within 5 days of arrival and we will arrange a refund / replacement.

Out of Stock

We update inventory periodically when there is a change in available products.  In the rare event that you purchase a knife no longer in inventory, we will immediately contact you and work out a resolution that is acceptable to you.

Mis-Priced Items

We are human.  In the event that we have made an error in pricing an item, you will be notified with the course of action.  We reserve the right to correct the price and will always offer the choice of cancellation to the customer.

Original Box

We obtain knives from dealers, collections, trades, and any way imaginable.  In every case we try and acquire the original box with each knife, but many times this is impossible.  Therefore, you are buying the knife; not the box.  If the knife came to us in a container, you will get that container with the purchase; otherwise we will package it securely and send you the knife only.  If the box is in the picture you will get it.

What we do with your information

Customer information, whether public or private, will not be sold, exchanged, transferred, or given to any other company for any reason whatsoever, without the consent of the customer, other than for the express purpose of delivering the purchased product or service requested by the customer.

For your safety and protection, your credit card information is not stored on our servers. Our payment gateway provider keeps this information encrypted and secure on your behalf.

The email address you provide for order processing, may be used to send you information and updates pertaining to your order, in addition to periodic company news, updates, and/or related product or service information, etc.  If you decide to opt-in to our newsletter, you will receive emails that may include company news, updates, related product or service information, promotions, etc. However, you may opt-out at any time by using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the newsletter.

Payments

All major credit cards are accepted as long as the billing address is inside the United States. This includes American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. All purchases made via Credit Card are kept secure via 128 bit SSL encryption.  Paypal is also accepted and will be offered as an option during checkout.

Money orders / cashiers checks are accepted but you must email or call us first to place the item on hold.  We will only hold an item pending payment for 5 business days - it is not a layaway plan.

Defective Items

The term "defective" has gotten very liberally used over the last few years for some reason.  If there is a defect, either the factory or CollectorKnives will resolve it.  But small cosmetic issues that neither the factory nor CollectorKnives considers defects will be treated as personal preference issue.  For example, if a blade is not "perfectly" centered but is not rubbing the liners.  Or slab materials that contain natural variations in color / texture caused by density, etc.  Rest assured, we will always offer a solution, but we are not going to get into the cross shipping game to let you pick thru our stock one knife at a time until that "perfect" knife shows up.

Cherry Picking

We do not go thru every knife in stock looking for the exact character that is desired.  Not only is that not fair to all future customers, but it is too time consuming for us.  Nobody wants to get a knife that has been opened several times and passed over by others.  If you have some characteristics that your prefer, email them to us or include them in the notes section of the order and we will do our best to insure the knife picked meets your expectations.  But please don't email / call ahead of time and ask us to go thru the entire store and see if there is something you might be interested in ordering.  If we would not be happy to get a knife, we cull it - that simple.  So these types of problems very rarely show up with CollectorKnives.

Q:  Does the knife come with a box?

A:  If there is a box in the picture - yes.  If the description says it comes with a box - yes.  Otherwise it will come as pictured.  We do not grade the box, thus it may have some damage or it may be factory perfect.

Q:  Is the knife in the picture the one I will get?

A:  We take stock pictures of every item when it is added to the website.  Because of the extensive amount of inventory arriving daily, we do not have the time nor the manpower to take front / back pictures of every knife.  Some smaller competitors can, but please remember that if the knife is not something we would be tickled to recieve it goes out the back door to the flea market.  Our volume allows us to take a loss here and there on an item that does not meet our criteria.  Others that blow about having every knife pictured have A) already sold the best examples to their insiders, and B) are guaranteeing that your knife has been picked over by others.  We offer our customers an equal chance to get the best example of a lot that have already been culled thru by us; whether the first day on the site or the last - whether you are our best customer or a brand new one.

Several dealers use this as a sticking point for customers that are looking for a place to buy online.  The fact is that issues involving our customer being unhappily surprised by a knife purchased via a stock picture are near non-existant.  But if they don't scare you before you buy from us; they have no chance at ever getting you back.

Update: Starting with GEC stag and primitive knives produced after 1/1/14, we will have front & back pictures that correspond to a selection list for your choosing.  The new website has afforded us an easier and less costly way to accomodate this request.

Q:  Is the knife "new"?

A:  We do not grade knives as "new".  We grade them as "Mint" (factory fresh or as fresh as they were available in their time), "Near Mint" (very close to mint but may have a small spot or pin crack or scratch, but never used), or "Excellent" (may be sharpened or have several spots, etc. but still functional).  We have knives made 50 years ago that are "mint", but not "new".  So we do not use "new" in our grade.  The standard grading system we use is here.

Q:  How much is shipping?

A:  Shipping is calculated automatically when you put in your zip code at the bottom of the cart.  If there is not a place to enter the zip code, then shipping is free (GEC products only).

Q:  Do you ship internationally?  Why not?

A:  No.  After trying several times to make international shipping a feasible option, we have resigned to the fact that it can't be done with out products in an economical fashion.  In the economical means (first class, priority) there is no way to guarantee delivery nor insure the delivery.  And although that may not be a problem when things go well, when they go bad we always get holding the bag.  Because paypal and credit cards will automatically refund a payment for an item I can't prove was delivered.  And while most customs agents and customers are stand up folks, there are those that simply are not.  We were having a 15% loss rate and that was putting us in the red on international shipments.  When we went to express, which we could insure, and the delivery rate was exceptional.  But customers complained constantly about the $30-40 shipping fee.  Then, along came Fish and Wildlife!  Any package that has a non-domesticated animal component (stag, horn, ivory, pearl, abalone); must be claimed on the label and a Fish and Wildlife inspection fee (at the time was $91) paid per package.  There were also licensing requirements.  At that point we decided to discontinue it altogether.  There are those that still ship these items internationally; but the first time they get randomly inspected will be their last.  

But, that doesn't need to stop you!  Check out companies like AmForward that will forward your packages for a very reasonable price.  We accept international payments via Paypal (use the paypal option at checkout and then you can use your Credit Card or Paypal account to pay).  Just use your private shipping address that they will provide you; and they will forward the package straight to your door.  That keeps us legal and you happy!

Q: What does "LG" or "LG+" stand for?

A: GEC has introduced a new material that needs a couple of comments.  This Looking Glass Abalone is genuine abalone veneer sheets sliced very thin and encased in acrylic.  It gives the beauty of abalone without the cost.  They will typically be about the same price as any other acrylic in the same pattern.  This material is a mosaic veneer and there will be visible seams in the abalone sheets; this is why the price is right on them.  They also have pearl, black pearl, awabi, etc.

Q: Does the new website still have a Rewards Program?

A: We are testing a new Rewards program right now that can be found as a "Rewards" tab on each page.  All the rules and earnings are explained within the tab itself.  If you don't see the tab, your browser probably has a script blocker.

Q: What does "EDC" stand for as a condition?

A: Every Day Carry ("EDC") are knives which have minor cosmetic issues which allow us to discount them at a tremendous savings to the customer that simply wants a great carrying knife.  Maybe the bone is a couple of shades lighter on the front, or a pin was flattened during the finishing process.  Either way they are functionally perfect and your satisfaction is guaranteed !   They are not seconds.  Due to manufacturer guidelines for handling this line, we cannot show actual pictures of the knives with flaws; thus we will recycle our pictures from the general production models we have on file.

Q: How do I use a coupon?

A: If your coupon is for a free item or discount on a certain item; make sure THAT item is in the cart.  When you initially view your cart there is a box labeled "Coupon Code" to the right and above your cart.  Enter your coupon code there exactly as it was given to you.  If it does not immediately show the discount, it was not entered correctly.  Don't enter the code in the "Comments" box or any other box that looks like a nice place to enter it.  It would amaze you how many orders have to be manually modified because this step was not followed.  If it is not entered correctly and we don't catch it before it ships, it will not be honored.

Q: Why are some GEC's serialized and some not?

A: It is mostly to do with demand for serialized models, but Great Eastern actually has a general rule on serialization.  A) If there will be less than 50 produced, none will be serialized.  B) If there will be more than 50, but less than 75 produced, the first 25 will be serialized.  C) If there will be 75 or more produced, the first 35 will be serialized.  D) Genuine Stag, Natural Stag, Primitive Bone, Snakewood, and some other prime handles will always be serialized.  There are periodically other exceptions (SFO's, etc.); but these are the general rules.

Q: Is my satisfaction guaranteed?

A: All purchases are 100% satisfaction guaranteed.  If within 5 days you are not satisfied with the purchase, contact us to arrange return.  If the product is not as described, or defective, we will issue a store credit equivelant to the selling price plus flat rate priority mail for return postage.  If a personal preference return, we will hold out only actual incurred expenses.  All returns must include all boxes and paperwork originally sent.

Q: What is your low price guarantee?

A: Don't fall for free shipping, 50% off Retail, or any other ploy to draw your attention away from the actual final price paid for a collectible knife.  If they add 7.5% to our price and then ship First Class in an envelope with a trinket or 10% coupon; are you really getting a better deal?  Compare their delivered price to ours and we are so sure that we offer the best prices available that we will match any delivered price from our online storefront competition in the form of a partial credit.  Subject to in-stock and same condition items once price / stock confirmed.  Let us show you how we earn our reviews!

Q: What is your Rewards Program?

A: We now offer our rewards program to everyone!  Just use the tab at the bottom located on each page to track and utilize your Rewards.  To be eligible all you need do is login to your account on CollectorKnives.  When you want to see how many points you have or redeem points, just click the tab at the bottom.  If you don't see the tab or the pop up does not work, you are probably blocking scripts on your browser.  The signup bonus is for those that did not previously have a CollectorKnives account.  Purchase points will accrue once order is shipped.

Q: Can I purchase shipping insurance?

A: USPS Priority now comes with $50 insurance standard.  But if you wish to purchase more shipping insurance, the option is available on the left hand menu of every page.

Q: Can I use a credit card with a foreign "Billing" address?

A:  No.  Due to extensive fraud using stolen international credit cards and just simply international crooks, we will no long accept international credit cards.  We didn't ship outside the U.S. anyway, so many folks were using re-shippers.  But these services are so easy to utilize when committing credit card fraud, that we are tired of chasing them down.  If you want to use a re-shipper, you can use Paypal where we are protected from this foolishness.

Q: Please explain "Pull" and "Factory Effort" on your newer listings.

A: In our attempt to provide as much information as possible for each knife listed, we have added a couple of "opinions" to the list of specifications.  First is "Pull".  The pull is the amount of effort to open the blade from a closed position.  This is very relative as some folks have stronger hands / fingers / fingernails than others.  But my somewhat flexible definition of the ranking follows.  Five (5) would be your typical pocket knife with good backspring pressure, but not a big snap when closing.  Seven (7) would be a bit tight but really nice snap when opening / closing.  Nine (9) would be too tight to reasonable open for regular use and Ten (10) would be one that is welded shut.  I like to see them in the 5-7 range; but many older knives were more like a 4 and had a great flow about them.

Second is "Factory Effort".  Every knife makes some patterns better than others.  Also, factories sometimes put out a lackluster effort on a knife they have made better previously.  This is just my way to give you an expectation on what to expect compared to all the knives in this makers catalog.  I am not comparing them to other makers; only their own previous work.  A rating of 7/8 is what I would call the standard expectation for this company.  An effort of 9 means they really did a nice job on this knife and it stands apart from the standard expectation.  If you ever see a 10, that means that in my opinion this could be one of the best production deliveries this company has made.  Going the other way, a 5 probably means this company paid little attention to quality control.
